From Plump to Pumped: The 'Fast' Way to Success

I know it's been a while since I've posted anything on my blog (though I've posted a few quick things on facebook, so make sure to follow/like the page!). It's been an extremely busy summer for me and so I haven't had the time to post anything. Now that the busy summer is over I can begin posting some more again :)

I'm excited to say my first returning post is an awesome one! One of my friends, Mykey, used the same principles I used last year detailed in my 12 week transformation series to get cut up for the summer. He was willing to let me interview him and share his dramatic results with others!

He had tried cutting the previous year but with less success...he basically became a smaller version of himself due to following some bad ideas. But this year was a different story! The pictures below speak for themselves. He had awesome results and he looks amazing!

Check out the picture below from his attempted cut in 2011:

2011 Cut Attempt
You can see that he's significantly smaller but only slightly more defined. This meant he lost fat but also lost quite a bit of muscle :( Now check out the picture below for his 2012 cut! He's 185 lbs in the 'Before' picture and 163 lbs in the 'After' picture. A loss of 22 lbs!

2012 Aesthetic Cut!
Notice his abs are clearly defined, he has more of a V-taper, and clear separation in his arms and shoulders. He just looks damn good! Compare the 'After' pictures from 2011 and 2012 and you can see a HUGE difference this time around.  Mykey actually weighs 2 lbs less in 2012 but he actually looks bigger and more muscular!

Mykey was basically was on his own with this and I wasn't personally consulting with him. He would occasionally ask me questions here and there, just like commenters on my blog do, but we weren't discussing his diet and training weekly or anything like that. He read my blog posts, used them as a guideline, and tweaked what he needed to find what worked best for him. So let's get onto the interview!

Aesthetic Muscle: I have to say this is the best I have ever seen you look. When I saw you in Vegas for my bachelor party, you looked aesthetic as f**k!

Mykey: Thanks man, the advice on your blog really helped.  It feels great to work hard and finally get awesome results!  I knew we would all be shredding for your wedding so it would have been lame if I was the only one in our group of friends that was out of shape for the bachelor party vacation.

Aesthetic Muscle: Haha, more like shredding for the bachelor party :) What convinced you to cut this time around the same way I did in my 12 week transformation series?

Mykey: Around the holidays last year I was eating and drinking so much and was just getting fat despite working out up to 5 days a week at the gym.  After New Years Eve I just felt like a waste of life.  I took a picture of myself shirtless in the mirror and was unhappy with myself and decided that it was time for a change.

I looked at pictures from my previous cut last year where I just ate less, lifted and ran on the treadmill everyday. I remembered you saying that my results weren't as pronounced as they could have been because I lost too much weight too fast.  I decided to try your approach because of your unbelievable results and I knew it couldn't have been a gimmick since I've known you for years.

Stop lying to yourselves and make a change!

Aesthetic Muscle: Yeah, seeing pictures of yourself is always a real eye-opener. I never understood how people can see themselves in pictures being fatter than everyone else and thinking its okay.
So what did you do different between last year's cut and this year's cut?

Mykey: Last year I was just eating less and killing myself with at least 3 miles of running everyday combined with lifting.

This year, the biggest difference was in my diet and using intermittent fasting.  I would fast for 16 hours and would eat within an 8 hour window.  I made sure to count my calories closely this time to ensure I was getting enough protein in my diet.  I cut out carbs aside from those I got from fruits and vegetables and I gave myself a cheat day once every weekend, but I made sure not to go overboard.

I also took supplements like protein, creatine, BCAA's , preworkouts, fat burners,  fishoil and multivitamins in conjunction with my diet and exercise, which I never regularly did in the past. Below is list of the specific products I used during the cut. I didn't use all of them at once but used a variety of brands just because I wanted to try out different products:

One of mine and Mykey's favorite protein powders. It tastes like a milkshake!

In terms of exercise, I switched to a 5x5 routine and lifted as heavy as I could. The only cardio I did was about a half hour to an hour of walking on the treadmill or elliptical every other day. This was a huge difference from the endless miles I was running last year.

Aesthetic Muscle: I was trying to tell everybody that I didn't jog a single mile last year for my cut! I hope this helps more people realize jogging miles and miles is not going to make them look awesome. Its also too bad they changed the Myofusion formula and OxyElite Pro is harder to get now. Those were two of my favorites!

Which difference did you think helped you the most?

Mykey: I truly believe intermittent fasting really helped.  In the past I had always been able to work out and get into decent shape, but I think fasting helped me lose fat while gaining muscle.  Before this year, I never really saw good definition in my muscles.  Once I started seeing quick results, it was much easier for me to maintain the motivation to go to the gym and intermittent fast everyday.

Aesthetic Muscle: Losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time sounds like a wonderful thing to me! Which part did you find to be the most difficult?

Mykey: The first day or two of fasting was a little difficult since the feelings of false hunger were unfamiliar.  It seemed like I was surrounded by friends, family and coworkers that ate what they pleased and expected me to as well.  The hardest part was blocking out everyone else while disciplining myself to take control of what I would consume to look the way I wanted.

Aesthetic Muscle: Yes, that's very true. I used to work in an office environment where everybody was so concerned about what they were going to eat for lunch, all the while they were snacking away at their desk! Plus, everybody is always telling you to eat this and eat that. Offices are a terrible environment people create for themselves in terms of health and good looks.

Did you do anything different than what I had outlined?

Mykey: I did your 5x5 workout and eventually switched to the Bill Starr MadCow 5x5 for some variety.  I also fasted for 16 hours (sometimes more) as opposed to your 20.  I also worked out in the mornings instead of evenings so I followed the Lean Gains Early Morning Fasted Training Protocol

Instead of having a whole cheat day every 2 weeks, I would just have a moderately sized cheat meal or two once every weekend.  If it ever got bad I would fast the entire next day and continue with intermittent fasting the day after that.

A terrible environment for aesthetics. Why does office food have to be all carbs?!

Aesthetic Muscle: Haha, there have been plenty of times that I've gone overboard on a cheat so I'll fast the whole day the next day too. Everybody thinks its so dangerous not eating anything but I actually think it feels great!
So now that you've reached a personal best level of aesthetics, what are your plans in regards to your diet and training?

Mykey: From this point, I'm going to try my best to gain as much additional muscle as I can while minimizing fat accumulation in the upcoming holiday season.   Then once Spring and Summer come around, I'd like to cut down again and take some measurements and new photos to see if I improved from this past summer.

Aesthetic Muscle: Thanks Mykey for sharing your results and success on my blog! Best of luck to you this year!

As you can see from Mykey's incredible results, I'm not the only one who can do it. Many people I know have tried intermittent fasting with great success! And if you find intermittent fasting doesn't sit right with you, just try anything else to change your body! Make the decision to change your body and transform your life! Transform your life for the sake of your spouse, for your kids, and for your family and friends. Stop thinking it is okay to get fatter and weaker as you get older. Find the motivation and make a promise to yourself to live a healthier life and do your part in stopping the obesity epidemic! Sorry for the rant ;)

Bulking is Done! - 22 Weeks Bulking Progress

After 22 weeks my bulk is finally over! After the holidays, I honestly couldn't wait because I was tired of being fat and couldn't wait to start cutting! Although it felt good at first to eat "bad" foods again, it got old pretty quick. Foods that I enjoyed while cutting started not to taste as good anymore and it got to be a chore to down it all.

The end result of my bulk?... 19 lbs gained in 22 weeks. I didn't quite gain the 1 lb per week I set out to do, but I think that was probably a good thing. After 8 weeks, I started to feel like I was gaining a lot of fat so I may have subconsciously started eating less and consciously implemented more no carb/cardio days.

People may think I'm crazy, but I definitely enjoy cutting a lot more than I do bulking. After reaching low bodyfat percentages, it's difficult to be fine with being any fatter.

Here are my starting and ending measurements:

Obviously, I gained inches everywhere on this bulk, but I"m happy with the 2" inches gained in on my chest measurement since I did put an emphasis to improve it. I'm also happy with only gaining 2 inches in my waist, which is down from the 35" inches I was at the same time last year.

One thing I didn't mention in my previous progress post is that I removed my leg days from my lifting schedule. I felt like my legs and especially my hips/glutes were getting out of proportion, thus ruining my aesthetics :) You can see that I gained 2 inches in my hip measurement despite despite not training hips at all for the last 6 weeks.

Overall, I'm happy with the end result. I have never been this big, strong, or "lean" at this weight before. Below are all my progress pictures that I during this bulk going from from left to right. (The pictures aren't perfectly aligned because I tried to scale the images all to about the same head size...and I got lazy with cropping.)

I'm not sure why the first picture's lighting is totally different but this was taken sometime around August when I was maintaining my lean condition for the summer. As you can see in the pictures as they progress, the cuts and tan decreases and the fat and size increases.

Looking at this picture sure does make me miss being at low bodyfat percentages!

Now that I'm done with bulking, I'm excited to start cutting and have actually been doing so for the past week and a half. It sure has felt great to start shedding the fat and seeing more cuts again! :)

18 Week Bulking Progress Update

It is now 18 weeks into my bulk and I sure am feeling fat now especially after the holidays.
My last "bulking" update was my 10 Week Bulking Progress Pics post where after a no carb/cardio day, I was weighing in at 172.5 lbs.

Eight weeks later, after a no carb/cardio day, I am weighing in at 178.5 lbs. This is up 6 lbs since my last update 8 weeks ago. This isn't quite the 1 lb gain per week I was shooting for, but I think that may be a good thing as I feel like I'm really starting to pack on the fat.

Can still see my abs but looking very blurry
At 14 weeks, I had finished up my 8 week run of Anabeta. So what did I think of the Anabeta?  Well, initially after the first 4 weeks I thought things were going well as I was feeling better and stronger both in and out of the gym. I also thought I looked better in the mirror.

However, with the last 4 weeks of Anabeta, it didn't seem to make any difference. I started to gain more fat and wasn't really gaining strength like I had been. I'm pretty sure the holiday eating had lots to do with it but it seems that perhaps Anabeta is best used in 4 weeks spurts (or maybe not at all).

After my Anabeta run was done, I was not using any extraneous supplements. For the previous 4 weeks I was just taking the basics: Protein, creatine, BCAA's, fishoil, and multivitamins...preworkouts also used on chest days. I still had the T2-Xtreme left from my first 4 weeks of bulking but decided not to use it since it didn't seem to do anything.

Looking bulkier with no more xmas tree :(
Actually looks like I've lost muscle due to the fat covering it up!
After this 4 week break of not using any extraneous supplements, I will be using the Testopro and DAA stack by AI Sports Nutrition. I grabbed this stack for a great price during their Black Friday sale and decided it would be a good addition for my last 4 weeks! Both Testopro and DAA supposedly boost testosterone so I'm hoping it will help pack on some extra muscle/strength during these last 4 weeks of my bulk.

It's been almost a week since I started the stack and I feel "something" already. Strength has increased in the gym, my libido is even higher than normal now, and I just have an overall alpha-male feeling. It feels great actually!

I'm looking forward to seeing what other results this stack will bring. But what I'm really looking forward to is being done with bulking. Being fat sure is a difficult mental barrier to get over. I don't know how the average person can do it. It's hard for me to look into the mirror looking so bulky and blurry after achieving levels of leanness I never had before. I don't know how the average person can be okay with looking seeing so much flab on their body.

Can still see abs and striated delts but I really hate looking so blurry!
Wish me luck with my next 4 weeks! Anybody else bulk up or still bulking during the winter? How are things going for you?

10 Week Bulking Progress Pics

It is now 10 weeks into my bulk and after a low carb, cardio day I am sitting at 172.5 lbs.

This is up 4.5 lbs in 5 weeks which is not quite a 1 lb a week gain but it's close enough and I'm happy to be gaining at this slow, steady pace. I never want to go back to where I was before.

As far as the Anabeta goes, I definitely feel a difference and can see a difference in the mirror using this as opposed to when I was using the T2-Xtreme. I've been gaining more strength in the gym so I believe it is having a positive effect. It actually feels like the T2-Xtreme wasn't doing anything compared to this Anabeta!

Staring to look "bulkier"
Christmas tree still present...but barely :(
Can still see my abs but definitely looking bigger and chunkier
These most recent pics show I'm looking bigger but also less muscular due to the fat gain. I'm okay with the rate of fat gain at this point as I don't look "fat" yet and can still see my abs. As far as body measurements go, I have gained 1 inch on my waist but 2 inches on my chest! I'm very happy with this as I have been prioritizing my chest during this bulk and it's awesome to be seeing results! :)

Keep checking back! I'll continue to keep you guys updated on my bulk! How has everyone else's bulk or cuts been going?

Aesthetic Bulking Plan

Don't bulk like this guy
Now that the warm summer days are slowly getting shorter and shorter, it's time to change my focus from looking "shredded" to gaining muscle in order to improve my "aesthetics" :)

The common term for this period of focus on muscle gain is known as "bulking". Many will use this period as an excuse to make everyday a cheat day which I believe is the wrong way to go. The argument for this is that a ton of calories is needed to support the body's process of building muscle. From my experience, this is false.

This is a mistake that I regret making in the past. I have learned that muscle can only grow so fast and that eating more and more calories will not force the body to build more muscle. Eating past the bodies caloric needs will only lead to increased fat storage which equates to being bigger but this is not the kind of "bigger" I am going after!

So during this bulk I want to do whatever I can to minimize fat gain!

Hopefully, I can stay close to this level of leanness
Aesthetic Bulking Diet

If you've been following my blog, then you know I used intermittent fasting to lose a ton a fat. In an attempt to stay fairly lean while bulking, I am going to continue intermittent fasting and basically using the same diet I followed to cut fat

The difference will be that I need to consume a higher caloric intake to build muscle so in order to do this, I will add about 75 grams of carbohydrates to my last meal of the day to start off. This carbohydrate amount will increase if I find I'm not gaining enough weight.

While I was cutting, I was taking in anywhere between 1,200 - 1,700 calories a day. I know this seems low but the average caloric intake was higher if you include my cheat days. So adding the 75 grams of carbohydrates will increase my caloric intake by 300 calories. My range will now be anywhere from 1,500 - 2,000 calories.

I want to emphasize that this is just to start off. If I find I'm not making progress, I will increase my carbohydrate intake to 100 grams (additional 100 calories) and assess progress from there. This is all about taking it slow so that I don't gain unneeded fat.

I will also no longer have scheduled cheat days and refeeds, but will allow for a more relaxed, flexible approach to eating "bad" foods. For example, my carbohydrate source won't always necessarily come from a "clean" carbohydrate source such as sweet potatoes or oatmeal. If I feel like eating a bowl of cereal or instant noodles, I won't hesitate to have some.

No more extreme refeeds!
Also, if there is a special occasion where I happen to go overboard, I will fast for the entire day the next day and do a light cardio session. This will help me quickly lose the bloat from the water weight and allow me to feel and look good again.

I am aiming for an average weight gain of about 1 lb per week. Gaining weight at this rate will allow for my body to slowly adapt and build muscle without excessive fat gain.

Aesthetic Workout Routine

When it comes to how I will be training, my intentions are not just to get bigger everywhere, but to get bigger and develop the right places. I take a look at my body and evaluate what I need to improve on in order to obtain the most aesthetic physique I possibly can.

Right now I feel like my chest is my biggest weak point that I need to bring up in order to be more proportioned. So for this next bulking period, I plan on training my chest two times in my 8 day training split.

This is what it's about
I like to schedule my splits like this instead of a Monday through Sunday split, so that if I ever need to miss a workout for any reason I can just train what I was supposed to the train the next day. Here is how my split will go:

Day 1: Chest
Day 2: Legs
Day 3: Back Width
Day 4: Rest or cardio
Day 5: Chest
Day 6: Back Thickness
Day 7: Biceps, Shoulders (Rear delt emphasis)
Day 8: Rest or cardio

As you can see from my split, I will be working my chest twice and other body parts once during the split. I won't be working my triceps at all as I feel they get a decent stimulus from my chest workouts and already overpower my upper arm.

You'll also notice below that for my last chest exercise, I'll be doing 7 sets of 8-12 reps. These seven sets for the last exercise are from based on the FST-7 training protocol. FST stands for Fascia Stretch Training, and the seven refers to the seven sets performed for the final exercise of a target bodypart. It's an interesting concept which I've never tried before but am hopeful it will help bring up my chest. You can learn more about the training concept by clicking on my link above.

Here are the exercises, sets and reps that I'll be doing:

Chest
Chest 1 workout
Decline Dumbbell Press - 4 x 6-8 reps
Incline Dumbbell Press - 3 x 8-10 reps
Machine Flye - 3 x 8-10 reps

Aesthetic Bulking Supplements

During this bulk I will be using two supplements I've never used before.

The first one is T2 Xtreme. T2 (3,3'-Diiodo-L-Thyronine & 3,5-Diiodo-L-Thyronine) is normally used to burn fat but it has been shown to possibly work better to prevent fat gain during periods of caloric excess and build and restructure lean muscle. This will be my first time using T2 during a bulk so I'm interested to see if the studies translate to real world results.

I also will be using Anabeta. This a new supplement recently released by PES which has received a lot of hype. I normally wouldn't fall for the hype of new supplements but the amount of positive reviews from user logs was hard to ignore. PES is also a good company that has released other effective supplements as well.

They were able to convince me to order two bottles when they had their presale so I will be using it for 8 weeks. I'm excited to see how good this Anabeta really is :)

Here is how I will be using the T2 Xtreme and Anabeta:

Weeks 1-4: T2 Xtreme
Weeks 5-12: Anabeta
Weeks 13-16: T2 Xtreme

Here is what my daily supplement schedule will be like when using T2 Extreme:
7:30 AM - 1 gram Vitamin C and 1 T2 Xtreme
3:00 PM - 1 T2 Xtreme
4:00 PM - 1 scoop Myofusion protein shake (plus preworkout on chest days and  if needed)
5:30 PM - 2 scoops Myofusion protein shake, 2 softgels of Now Ultra Omega 3
6:00 PM - Multivitamin & 5,000 IU of Vitamin D with dinner
8:00 PM - 1 scoop Myofusion protein shake, 2 softgels of Now Ultra Omega 3
10:00 PM - 1 T2 Xtreme

For the weeks when I'll be using Anabeta, I'll dose it 4 times spread out evenly throughout the day taking it at 7:30 AM, 12:30 PM, 5:30 PM, and 10 PM.

By the end of this bulk, I'm hoping to add at least two or more inches to my chest. If my back, rear delts, and biceps get bigger than that would be great as well :)

I'll be bulking for 16-20 weeks so I expect to gain about 16-20 lbs. I know all of that won't be muscle but if at least half of that is, that would be awesome!

Let me know what you think of my "aesthetic" bulking plan and how you plan on bulking this fall/winter?
