Controlled Labs PROnom 23 Protein Review

Ever since Gaspari discontinued Myofusion and Myofusion Hydro, I've been on the search for a new favorite protein. I do love BSN's Syntha-6 but the carbs and fats are a little high for times when I'm cutting calories.

PROnom 23 is Controlled Labs' newest product and their entry into the protein powder market. It's been getting a lot of great feedback on the forums. Controlled Labs is a trusted company by many so I was very interested in trying out their protein.

Vanilla Cupcake Batter opened up!

MuscleHQ had this on sale so I decided to buy a jug of each flavor to try it out. The two flavors currently available are Chocolate Cupcake Batter and Vanilla Cupcake Batter. One 4 lb jug provides 53 servings and was on sale for $39 a jug. This is a little pricier than what I would normally spend on protein but I decided to splurge a bit based on Controlled Labs' reputation and feedback.

PROnom 23 isn't a straight whey protein powder but is a protein blend made up of six different proteins which are: Whey Protein Concentrate, Whey Protein Isolate  Whey Protein Hydrolysate, Micellar Casein, Milk Protein Isolate, Calcium Caseinate. Protein blends typically taste better since the company is able to manipulate the texture using different proteins, and additional fats and sugars normally added as well.

Taste
The protein is one of the better proteins I have tasted. The Vanilla to me doesn't really taste like vanilla but it is still good, perhaps more like a light French vanilla. Some have said it reminds them of Twinkies  The chocolate tastes very good and would be the flavor I would choose if I had to choose one. Others say it taste like Swiss Miss hot chocolate.

Texture
The texture is very smooth and has no clumps as advertised. However, it is a tiny bit chalky. I prefer my shakes to be thicker so I like this protein with very little water, around 6-8 ounces for two scoops.

Shaken in the Blender Bottle. No clumps!

Smell
This protein smells awesome. The chocolate cupcake batter smells like a mix of Hershey's chocolate and Qwik powder. The vanilla cupcake batter has a weaker smell but it still smells good. I can smell the vanilla, but it is a very light vanilla smell just like it's light vanilla taste.

Mixability
The mixability of PROnom 23 is one of the best. It mixes very fast with no clumps and  only takes a couple shakes with the blender bottle.

Overall
This is a protein that I would rank pretty high up there. It tastes great, smells great, mixes great! I would definitely buy this again if I could find a good deal on it. 39 plus shipping for 4 lbs is a little high but 30-32 dollars for 4 lbs would be awesome.

PROnom 23 hasn't taken over as my favorite. I still prefer Myofusion and Syntha-6 but it's a good protein that I would definitely look forward to drinking. This is only my opinion but other users seem to love the protein. I would rate PROnom 23 a 4 out of 5 stars :)

From Plump to Pumped: The 'Fast' Way to Success

I know it's been a while since I've posted anything on my blog (though I've posted a few quick things on facebook, so make sure to follow/like the page!). It's been an extremely busy summer for me and so I haven't had the time to post anything. Now that the busy summer is over I can begin posting some more again :)

I'm excited to say my first returning post is an awesome one! One of my friends, Mykey, used the same principles I used last year detailed in my 12 week transformation series to get cut up for the summer. He was willing to let me interview him and share his dramatic results with others!

He had tried cutting the previous year but with less success...he basically became a smaller version of himself due to following some bad ideas. But this year was a different story! The pictures below speak for themselves. He had awesome results and he looks amazing!

Check out the picture below from his attempted cut in 2011:

2011 Cut Attempt
You can see that he's significantly smaller but only slightly more defined. This meant he lost fat but also lost quite a bit of muscle :( Now check out the picture below for his 2012 cut! He's 185 lbs in the 'Before' picture and 163 lbs in the 'After' picture. A loss of 22 lbs!

2012 Aesthetic Cut!
Notice his abs are clearly defined, he has more of a V-taper, and clear separation in his arms and shoulders. He just looks damn good! Compare the 'After' pictures from 2011 and 2012 and you can see a HUGE difference this time around.  Mykey actually weighs 2 lbs less in 2012 but he actually looks bigger and more muscular!

Mykey was basically was on his own with this and I wasn't personally consulting with him. He would occasionally ask me questions here and there, just like commenters on my blog do, but we weren't discussing his diet and training weekly or anything like that. He read my blog posts, used them as a guideline, and tweaked what he needed to find what worked best for him. So let's get onto the interview!

Aesthetic Muscle: I have to say this is the best I have ever seen you look. When I saw you in Vegas for my bachelor party, you looked aesthetic as f**k!

Mykey: Thanks man, the advice on your blog really helped.  It feels great to work hard and finally get awesome results!  I knew we would all be shredding for your wedding so it would have been lame if I was the only one in our group of friends that was out of shape for the bachelor party vacation.

Aesthetic Muscle: Haha, more like shredding for the bachelor party :) What convinced you to cut this time around the same way I did in my 12 week transformation series?

Mykey: Around the holidays last year I was eating and drinking so much and was just getting fat despite working out up to 5 days a week at the gym.  After New Years Eve I just felt like a waste of life.  I took a picture of myself shirtless in the mirror and was unhappy with myself and decided that it was time for a change.

I looked at pictures from my previous cut last year where I just ate less, lifted and ran on the treadmill everyday. I remembered you saying that my results weren't as pronounced as they could have been because I lost too much weight too fast.  I decided to try your approach because of your unbelievable results and I knew it couldn't have been a gimmick since I've known you for years.

Stop lying to yourselves and make a change!

Aesthetic Muscle: Yeah, seeing pictures of yourself is always a real eye-opener. I never understood how people can see themselves in pictures being fatter than everyone else and thinking its okay.
So what did you do different between last year's cut and this year's cut?

Mykey: Last year I was just eating less and killing myself with at least 3 miles of running everyday combined with lifting.

This year, the biggest difference was in my diet and using intermittent fasting.  I would fast for 16 hours and would eat within an 8 hour window.  I made sure to count my calories closely this time to ensure I was getting enough protein in my diet.  I cut out carbs aside from those I got from fruits and vegetables and I gave myself a cheat day once every weekend, but I made sure not to go overboard.

I also took supplements like protein, creatine, BCAA's , preworkouts, fat burners,  fishoil and multivitamins in conjunction with my diet and exercise, which I never regularly did in the past. Below is list of the specific products I used during the cut. I didn't use all of them at once but used a variety of brands just because I wanted to try out different products:

One of mine and Mykey's favorite protein powders. It tastes like a milkshake!

In terms of exercise, I switched to a 5x5 routine and lifted as heavy as I could. The only cardio I did was about a half hour to an hour of walking on the treadmill or elliptical every other day. This was a huge difference from the endless miles I was running last year.

Aesthetic Muscle: I was trying to tell everybody that I didn't jog a single mile last year for my cut! I hope this helps more people realize jogging miles and miles is not going to make them look awesome. Its also too bad they changed the Myofusion formula and OxyElite Pro is harder to get now. Those were two of my favorites!

Which difference did you think helped you the most?

Mykey: I truly believe intermittent fasting really helped.  In the past I had always been able to work out and get into decent shape, but I think fasting helped me lose fat while gaining muscle.  Before this year, I never really saw good definition in my muscles.  Once I started seeing quick results, it was much easier for me to maintain the motivation to go to the gym and intermittent fast everyday.

Aesthetic Muscle: Losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time sounds like a wonderful thing to me! Which part did you find to be the most difficult?

Mykey: The first day or two of fasting was a little difficult since the feelings of false hunger were unfamiliar.  It seemed like I was surrounded by friends, family and coworkers that ate what they pleased and expected me to as well.  The hardest part was blocking out everyone else while disciplining myself to take control of what I would consume to look the way I wanted.

Aesthetic Muscle: Yes, that's very true. I used to work in an office environment where everybody was so concerned about what they were going to eat for lunch, all the while they were snacking away at their desk! Plus, everybody is always telling you to eat this and eat that. Offices are a terrible environment people create for themselves in terms of health and good looks.

Did you do anything different than what I had outlined?

Mykey: I did your 5x5 workout and eventually switched to the Bill Starr MadCow 5x5 for some variety.  I also fasted for 16 hours (sometimes more) as opposed to your 20.  I also worked out in the mornings instead of evenings so I followed the Lean Gains Early Morning Fasted Training Protocol

Instead of having a whole cheat day every 2 weeks, I would just have a moderately sized cheat meal or two once every weekend.  If it ever got bad I would fast the entire next day and continue with intermittent fasting the day after that.

A terrible environment for aesthetics. Why does office food have to be all carbs?!

Aesthetic Muscle: Haha, there have been plenty of times that I've gone overboard on a cheat so I'll fast the whole day the next day too. Everybody thinks its so dangerous not eating anything but I actually think it feels great!
So now that you've reached a personal best level of aesthetics, what are your plans in regards to your diet and training?

Mykey: From this point, I'm going to try my best to gain as much additional muscle as I can while minimizing fat accumulation in the upcoming holiday season.   Then once Spring and Summer come around, I'd like to cut down again and take some measurements and new photos to see if I improved from this past summer.

Aesthetic Muscle: Thanks Mykey for sharing your results and success on my blog! Best of luck to you this year!

As you can see from Mykey's incredible results, I'm not the only one who can do it. Many people I know have tried intermittent fasting with great success! And if you find intermittent fasting doesn't sit right with you, just try anything else to change your body! Make the decision to change your body and transform your life! Transform your life for the sake of your spouse, for your kids, and for your family and friends. Stop thinking it is okay to get fatter and weaker as you get older. Find the motivation and make a promise to yourself to live a healthier life and do your part in stopping the obesity epidemic! Sorry for the rant ;)

Bad experience with VPX Syngex protein

Last month I had a really bad experience with VPX Sports Syngex protein. I had decided to buy it because the protein was on sale for a cheap price and I had no problems with it previously when I tried their Cookies & Cream flavor.

I ordered two 5 lb jugs, one of each flavor: Chocolate and Vanilla.

When I first started using it, I had the worst stomach irritation/discomfort and diarrhea. I had never experienced anything like this before! It felt like I was urinating out of my ass!

I continued to use it for the next few days thinking that it may have been something else. But every night after I took the protein, I experienced the same symptoms. Immediately after discontinuing the use of the Syngex protein, the symptoms went away so I was confident the Syngex protein was the cause of my troubles.

This is how I felt

I searched some forums to see if this had been reported before and did find others that experienced the same thing, but also others who did not. I wondered what could be causing this horrible reaction in me and certain others but then not everybody?

I wrote to Nutraplanet.com where I ordered the protein and described my problem and they told me they don't accept returns on opened items...Damn. This was all they wrote back to me:

"You are free to return any UNOPENED product for a full refund."

Pretty good customer service huh? So now, I have two 5 lb opened jars that I can't return and can't use :(

I decided to contact VPX on their facebook page and described my experience with the Syngex protein. They responded with a comment telling me to email them. I emailed them and got a quick response back from Jon Owoc.

I ideally just wanted a refund, but they offered to send me a jug of their SRO protein, which is lactose free, zero carb, whey protein isolate (they suspected it might have been the lactose in the Syngex that caused me troubles but I can drink milk, eat ice cream, and drink other whey concentrates just fine, so I disagreed with the cause).

I doubted they would have refunded me for the money I spent elsewhere for the product so I took them up on their offer for the tub of SRO protein and also let them know my problems were not due to the lactose and maybe I had gotten a bad batch. They did ask for the lot numbers on the jars I had and said they would let their production know in case they run into similar issues in the future.

A few days later I received a package in the mail from VPX and I was happy to see they sent me a 5 lb jug of their SRO protein, a 2 lb jug of their Protein Rush product, and a box of their Zero Impact protein bars!

Thanks VPX!
I'm happy to report the SRO Protein causes no issues for me so I am actually able to use it!
I haven't tried the Protein Rush yet, but the VPX Impact bars are pretty good and cause no issues either.

This one bad experience won't prevent me from using VPX products in the future, but my bad experience with Nutraplanet customer service definitely gives me second thoughts about ordering from them again.

This is the first time in my plus 10 years of taking supplements that I've actually tried to return a product. It's too bad Nutraplanet couldn't do more for me considering I've been a long time customer and have spent thousands over the years, but I'm sure glad VPX was able to do something for me. Thanks for the great service VPX!

LG Sciences Lipotropic Protein: 5 lbs for 18 dollars!

If you guys want some cheap protein, I just ordered some LG Sciences Lipotropic Protein from Sportsnutritiononline.com. It's currently  5 lbs for 18 dollars!

Flat rate shipping is 5.99. Use code  CEL-emdub  for an extra 5% off.

It is a blend of whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, genus protein isolate(pea protein), milk protein isolate, egg protein isolate and micellar casein.

I initially only ordered one bottle because I read reviews saying it was terrible but other reviews said it was pretty good.

I received my bottle and tasted it. It doesn't taste bad and is definitely drinkable. But it does have a unique taste to it due to the pea protein. But for 18 bucks it is a steal! It is cheap because it is expiring in April 2012. So I ordered another 2 bottles :)

18 Week Bulking Progress Update

It is now 18 weeks into my bulk and I sure am feeling fat now especially after the holidays.
My last "bulking" update was my 10 Week Bulking Progress Pics post where after a no carb/cardio day, I was weighing in at 172.5 lbs.

Eight weeks later, after a no carb/cardio day, I am weighing in at 178.5 lbs. This is up 6 lbs since my last update 8 weeks ago. This isn't quite the 1 lb gain per week I was shooting for, but I think that may be a good thing as I feel like I'm really starting to pack on the fat.

Can still see my abs but looking very blurry
At 14 weeks, I had finished up my 8 week run of Anabeta. So what did I think of the Anabeta?  Well, initially after the first 4 weeks I thought things were going well as I was feeling better and stronger both in and out of the gym. I also thought I looked better in the mirror.

However, with the last 4 weeks of Anabeta, it didn't seem to make any difference. I started to gain more fat and wasn't really gaining strength like I had been. I'm pretty sure the holiday eating had lots to do with it but it seems that perhaps Anabeta is best used in 4 weeks spurts (or maybe not at all).

After my Anabeta run was done, I was not using any extraneous supplements. For the previous 4 weeks I was just taking the basics: Protein, creatine, BCAA's, fishoil, and multivitamins...preworkouts also used on chest days. I still had the T2-Xtreme left from my first 4 weeks of bulking but decided not to use it since it didn't seem to do anything.

Looking bulkier with no more xmas tree :(
Actually looks like I've lost muscle due to the fat covering it up!
After this 4 week break of not using any extraneous supplements, I will be using the Testopro and DAA stack by AI Sports Nutrition. I grabbed this stack for a great price during their Black Friday sale and decided it would be a good addition for my last 4 weeks! Both Testopro and DAA supposedly boost testosterone so I'm hoping it will help pack on some extra muscle/strength during these last 4 weeks of my bulk.

It's been almost a week since I started the stack and I feel "something" already. Strength has increased in the gym, my libido is even higher than normal now, and I just have an overall alpha-male feeling. It feels great actually!

I'm looking forward to seeing what other results this stack will bring. But what I'm really looking forward to is being done with bulking. Being fat sure is a difficult mental barrier to get over. I don't know how the average person can do it. It's hard for me to look into the mirror looking so bulky and blurry after achieving levels of leanness I never had before. I don't know how the average person can be okay with looking seeing so much flab on their body.

Can still see abs and striated delts but I really hate looking so blurry!
Wish me luck with my next 4 weeks! Anybody else bulk up or still bulking during the winter? How are things going for you?

Beast Mode Preworkout Review

I recently posted about the free Beast Sports supplements samples that were being given away by BEAST Sports Nutrition. In that sample package was their preworkout supplement called Beast Mode. With such an awesome name for a preworkout, I was hoping it would really turn me into a Beast in the gym :)

Taste
The Beast Mode preworkout came in a common flavor, fruit punch. I had mixed the sample packet with 10 ounces of water as directed. When I sipped the drink, my first impression was that the taste was not very strong. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing or a good thing, I just didn't expect it to be so light due to my experience with other preworkouts.

Along with the light taste, it wasn't very sweet or sour either. It was almost like drinking a very light sugar water. Because of its light flavor, it was very easy to drink down. Another good thing was that it had no aftertaste.

The texture was a little chalky but otherwise it did mix smoothly in my blender bottle.

Energy
Once I finished the drink, I actually started to get a stomach-ache and feel light headed. The light headedness is common for me when I take a preworkout but the stomachache is not. Because of this I thought I was not going to have a very good workout.

Despite the stomachache and light headedness, once I got into the gym I felt great! My stomachache was gone and so was the light headed feeling. I didn't feel cracked out but it almost felt like I didn't want to rest between sets! My energy lasted well past the duration of my workout.

Strength
My strength has slowly been increasing since I started bulking and has been really noticeable lately. Because of this it's hard for me to say whether the strength increases I saw this workout were due to the Beast Mode or if I would have gotten the same weight and reps without it.

What I can say is that it didn't hurt and I did reach a new personal best in this particular workout...so maybe it was the Beast mode?

Beast Mode Activated!

Endurance
I felt great throughout the workout session. My strength was able to be sustained until the end and I never felt drained or exhausted.

Pump
I've mentioned before that I don't normally pay too much attention to pumps as I've never had trouble feeling the pump. But for the sake of the reviews I do try to see if there's any difference. I can honestly say that I did feel more pumped this workout than I normally do. Whether this was because of the beast mode or the increased weight and reps is hard to say as well...so I'll just say it was a combination of both :)

Overall
I thought the effects of this preworkout were pretty good. I reached new personal bests and I had good energy and endurance past the duration of the workout.

However, the stomach-ache was a major point of concern. I don't know which of the ingredients gave me a stomachache but whatever it was, it sure didn't feel good. But I also haven't read about any other reports of this either so it could have just been a one time occurrence or maybe just me.

I'd like to think the stomach-ache and lightheadedness was all a part of getting into Beast Mode! :)

Syntha-6 Decadence Bar Review

If you've ever had BSN's Syntha-6 Protein powders before, then you know BSN makes one of the most delicious protein shakes in the world :)

The company recently came out with their own meal replacement bar named Syntha-6 Decadence bars. I don't normally eat or use protein bars but I really wanted to try this one out to see if it was as delicious as the protein shakes they produce.

The flavor I tried was the Chocolate Caramel Pretzel so my review will be based on that flavor only.

Very decadent looking

Nutrition
One bar contains 350 calories consisting of 30 grams of protein, 9 grams of fat, and 44 grams of carbohydrates with 18 of those grams coming from sugar alcohols. The rest of the carbohydrates come from 1 gram of fiber and 13 grams of sugar.

The nutrition profile isn't exactly healthy but neither are many of the protein bars out there. These protein bars definitely wouldn't be good to use on a cut but would be something more likely used during a bulk.

Texture
The bar was extremely sticky and chewy but I guess that's to be expected when it involves caramel. It was moist from beginning to end and I never felt any dryness while chewing it so that's a plus. The pretzel pieces also added a nice crunch to contrast with the chewiness...I only wish there were more pretzel pieces. I would rate the texture as excellent.

Taste
The bar was a little on the sweeter side but not too sweet for me. The dominant flavor I tasted from the bar was caramel, with a slight bitterness from the chocolate. My mouth felt the crunch from the pretzel pieces but I would have liked more pretzel flavor, and probably just more and bigger pieces of pretzel to lessen sweetness of the caramel. The typical aftertaste that you get with most protein bars was in this one as well. I would rate the taste as just good.

Inside the wrapper...it had melted a bit from shipping :(
Overall
I have to say the Syntha-6 Decadence bar was good...but I was hoping for better. My expectations of the bar were high due to my experience with their awesome protein shakes but unfortunately, the bar did not live up to the expectations.

Not to say that the bar wasn't good, because it was...I was just expecting to be blown away which didn't happen. In comparison, when I first tried the Quest protein bars, I was wowed by these bars. So Quest protein bars are still my favorite protein bar and the best tasting bars in the world :)

Anybody have any suggestions of any other bars for me to try? Anything better than Quest protein bars?

Gaspari Nutrition Myofusion Protein Review

When it comes to my use of protein powders, I don't really have any strong opinions or bias for a particular brand. I've found that the two most important factors when it comes to choosing a protein powder is quality and taste.

Most of the other features advertised for protein powders such as how fast or slowly it absorbs, how it was filtered or exchanged won't make any noticeable difference for most people. I'm not sure it means any difference for the 1% of the population who actually need to focus on the little details either.

If I happen to try or sample a new protein powder that I like better than my current favorite, then the new protein powder would become my new favorite.

With this being said, Gaspari Nutrition Myofusion Protein is currently my protein powder of choice. Gaspari Nutrition is a trusted brand by a lot people so I trust that the protein powder is a quality protein and has what it says it has on the label.

The best thing about the powder is of course the taste. I've tried many different protein powders and the combination of Myofusion's taste, texture, and quality are above all others.

Here's what's listed on Gaspari's website about what Myofusion does:

  • A Cost Effective Yet Great Tasting Protein Powder Designed to be Used Multiple Times per Day Without Breaking your Budget

-I've found that Myofusion can be found anywhere from $35 - $40 dollars for a 5 lb jug which is a great deal considering today's protein prices. A 5 lb jug contains approximately 63 servings.
  • Optimal Ratios of Cross-Flow Cold Process/Microfiltered Whey Protein Concentrate & Isolate, Egg Albumen, and Milk Protein Isolate*

-This doesn't mean too much to me and wouldn't mean too much to most people. However, I do believe that protein blends are better for you than straight whey protein alone. Myofusion has a good blend of whey, egg, and milk proteins as listed above.
  • Contains A Powerful Proteolytic GaspariZyme™ Complex For Extreme Bioavailability and Maximum Amino Acid Levels In The Bloodstream*

-I don't know exactly what GaspariZyme is and I can't easily find it on the website but this probably makes little to no difference on the absorption of the protein.
  • No Sugar Added, Aspartame Free*

-No sugar added is always a good thing. No aspartame means they use other artificial sweeteners which I've found do taste better that aspartame.
  • Incredible Long-Term Taste Satisfaction*

-This is very true. I've been using Myofusion for about a year now and am very satisfied with the taste and look forward to drinking my favorite flavors every time.
Myofusion comes in 6 different flavors, of which I've tried all of them except the Cookies and Cream. The other flavors are Milk Chocolate, Delicious Vanilla, Strawberries & Cream, Chocolate Mint, and Banana Perfection. My favorite ones are Banana Perfection and Strawberries & Cream.

Last night, I just made another protein powder purchase as I'm running low on Myofusion. If Myofusion was on sale for $30 for a 5 lb jug I would have bought Myofusion, but since it wasn't I decided I would try some new ones that were priced lower. I bought Muscle Pharm Combat Powder Banana Cream, VPX Sports Syngex Cookies & Cream, and 4 Ever Fit Fruit Blast the Whey Mango Magic from AllStarHealth.com
We'll see if one of the above take over Myofusion as my favorite protein.
